Framed oil on board (25 x 31.5 inches, when unframed)
This is a painting based on Shakespeare’s play, Coriolanus. We see Coriolanus’s mother, Volumnia, pleading with him to stay in Rome and appease the Roman people (plebians) who previously considered him their hero. Coriolanus despises the plebians and does not believe their approval is required, or of any value. This is apparent to all! Tribunes, Brutus and Velutus successfully seize the opportunity to turn the crowd against Coriolanus. He is not to be a consul after all. We see Velutus pointing an accusing finger at him (played by the excellent actor, Adrian Rose).
