This painting is a portrait of Sir Ian McKellen, a complementary painting to that of Dame Judi Dench. They acted together in a famous production of Macbeth by Sir Trevor Nunn's Royal Shakespeare Company. This painting is part of The Visual Shakespeare Project and depicts icons from some of his favourite performances, Macbeth (the dagger), King Lear (the crown) and Hamlet (the skull). The rainbow and stone wall are a tribute to his campaign for LGBTQ+ equality, via Stonewall.
